Volunteers Pick up 139 Tons of Tornado Debris in 1 Day!

Our volunteers picked up 54 tons of wood and brush (14 large truckloads) and 85 tons of trash and litter (23 large truckloads) this past weekend from the Christmas night tornado-devastated community of Hillman Estates. Shades Mt. Baptist Church Youth Group showed up in a BIG WAY to help make a huge difference for these families that feel so overwhelmed by the magnitude of the damage. Over 200 volunteers spread out around the neighborhood to tackle this massive under-taking. You could see the hope spread across the faces of neighborhood residents, and the day became fun and exciting for everyone who pitched in. Seeing the streets transform so quickly was like watching a miracle happen! Thanks to Don Lupo for facilitating the truck pick-up by the City of Birmingham. We will be back this weekend to continue with the work that is needed to restore for the neighborhood.
